Active Directory یک ساختار سلسله مراتبی می باشد که اطلاعات اشیاء (objects) را در خود ذخیره می کند. یک سرویس directory مثل Active directory domain services یا (AD DS) روش هایی را برای ذخیره اطلاعات دایرکتوری و ایجاد این اطلاعات برای کاربران شبکه و ادمین فراهم می کند. به عنوان مثال، AD DS اطلاعاتی در مورد حساب های کاربری مانند نام ها، رمزهای عبور و… ذخیره می کند و سایر کاربران مجاز در همان شبکه را قادر می سازد تا به این اطلاعات دسترسی پیدا کند. Active Directory اطلاعات مربوط به اشیاء را در شبکه ذخیره می کند و این اطلاعات را برای admin و کاربران آسان می کند تا آنها را پیدا و استفاده کنند.
