در واقع Ceph یک پروژه اُپن سورس و رایگان است که راهکاری برای Software-define storage با کیفیت بالا و حذف single point of failure فراهم می‌نماید. به عبارتی Ceph storage یک راهکار واقعی و جامع در زمینه‌ی سرویس های یکپارچه ذخیره سازی است که دسترسی‌های استوریج در سطوح Block، Object و File را در اختیار ما می‌گذارد. قابلیت توسعه و اتصال از طریق API را نیز به این فهرست اضافه کنید. هدف Ceph در درجه اول توزیع کامل اطلاعت در دسته های کامپیوتری است به طوری که هیچ نقطه ای از دست نرود و همیشه قابل دسترس باشد. Ceph باعث می شود داده ها تکرار شوند و احتمال وقوع خطا را کاهش می دهد به وسیله سخت افزار معمول و بدون نیاز به ساپورت هیج سخت افزار خاص دیگر این کار قابل انجام است.
